Trying my hand at....hand lettering!

I just got through taking a calligraphy class, and while it was fun and somewhat educational, I didn't really learn a whole lot. My professor was about 95, and extremely ADD. And obsessed with german and old english style calligraphy, which is fine if you like that sort of thing. I'm more into the oblique pen style, which shows high contrast between pen strokes. Its also extremely decorative with lots of swirls and twirls. You can buy fonts that favor this look, but I'm kinda tired of relying so heavily on fonts. I want to try something that looks a little more personal and differs letter to letter....anyway.
